Ultrasound-Guided Thoracentesis Simulator (MW4) — Dual-Site Pleural Effusion Access Training

The Ultrasound-Guided Thoracentesis Simulator (Item No. MW4, [confirm weight — see note]) by Kyoto Kagaku, Japan lets students practice thoracentesis on both a full torso model and, using strap-on puncture units, on a standardized patient — supporting hybrid training sessions that combine anatomical accuracy with realistic patient interaction.

Two clinically relevant access sites in one simulator. The kit includes puncture units for both mid-scapular line access and mid-axillary line access — the two primary sites used for real thoracentesis procedures, letting students practice site selection alongside technique rather than training on a single fixed access point.

Adjustable difficulty for progressive skill-building. The volume of pleural effusion can be controlled, allowing instructors to set different levels of difficulty — useful for taking students from straightforward, larger-volume effusions through to more challenging, lower-volume scenarios as their skill develops.

Trains the complete clinical workflow: patient positioning, recognition of anatomical landmarks by ultrasound, assessment of pleural effusion level and volume, determination of insertion site, and needle insertion with fluid collection.

Hybrid training with standardized patients. The strap-on (wearable) puncture units let instructors run realistic sessions where students also practice patient positioning and communication with a live standardized patient — not just technical needle skills on a static torso.

What’s included: adult chest model, mid-axillary line unit, mid-scapular line unit, positioning pillow, thoracentesis explanation model, instruction manual, irrigator, funnel, 50ml syringe, tube with three-way stopcock, plastic jar.

Recommended needle: 22G–23G (needles not included).

Replacement parts available for both puncture pad types and the replacement lung, so consumable wear from repeated needle insertion can be addressed without replacing the full simulator.

Developed under supervision of Takahiro Amano, M.D., Vice President and Senior Vice-Dean, International University of Health and Welfare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can this be used with a live standardized patient, or only on the torso model?
A: Both — the strap-on puncture units allow hybrid sessions combining the torso model’s anatomical accuracy with realistic patient positioning and communication practice on a standardized patient.

Q: Which access sites are covered?
A: Mid-scapular line and mid-axillary line — the two primary clinical access sites for thoracentesis.

Q: Are needles included?
A: No — needles are not included. Recommended size is 22G–23G.
