Ultrasound Examination Training Phantom “ABDFAN” (US-1B) — Abdominal Sonography Training with Simulated Pathology

The Ultrasound Examination Training Phantom “ABDFAN” (Item No. US-1B, 12 kg) by Kyoto Kagaku, Japan is an abdominal ultrasound phantom built specifically with pathologies — the diagnostic counterpart to the standard ECHOZY phantom, which trains normal anatomy only. ABDFAN lets students practice identifying and characterizing actual abnormal findings, not just navigating healthy anatomy.

Realistic diagnostic scenarios, not just normal anatomy. ABDFAN includes simulated hepatic lesions (both cystic and solid), gallbladder and bile duct stones, pancreatic tumors (including one invading the portal vein), splenic lesions, bilateral kidney lesions, and a left adrenal tumor — giving students exposure to the range of pathology they’ll need to recognize in real clinical ultrasound practice.

Same anatomical foundation as ECHOZY, built for advanced training. Detailed hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and abdominal anatomy is included, along with the ability to localize all eight of the liver’s Couinaud’s hepatic segments — the same core skill foundation as the standard phantom, now applied to pathology recognition rather than only normal-anatomy training.

Training applications: basics of abdominal sonography, cross-sectional and sonographic anatomy, sonographic demonstration of each individual organ, and localization of hepatic Couinaud’s segments — now exercised against real pathological findings.

Two package options available:

  • Full Set: ultrasound phantom “ABDFAN,” anatomical model “ECHO-ZOU,” positioning pillow, talcum powder, tutorial manual (DVD), storage case, instruction manual.
  • Standard: ultrasound phantom “ABDFAN,” positioning pillow, talcum powder, tutorial manual (DVD), storage case, instruction manual (no anatomical model).

Developed under supervision of Junji Machi, MD, PhD, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Kuakini Medical Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is ABDFAN different from the ECHOZY phantom?
A: ECHOZY is a normal-anatomy phantom without pathologies, used for foundational sonographic training. ABDFAN includes simulated pathological findings — hepatic, biliary, pancreatic, splenic, renal, and adrenal — for diagnostic-level training.

Q: What pathologies are included?
A: Hepatic lesions (cystic and solid), gallbladder/bile duct stones, pancreatic tumors (one invading the portal vein), splenic lesions, bilateral kidney lesions, and a left adrenal tumor.

Q: What’s the difference between the two package options?
A: The Full Set adds a physical anatomical model (“ECHO-ZOU”) alongside the phantom. The Standard set includes the phantom and training materials without the anatomical model. Confirm with our team which configuration you’re ordering.
