Ultrasound Neonatal Head Phantom, Normal Type (US-14a) — Baseline Cranial Anatomy for Neonatal Ultrasound Training
The Ultrasound Neonatal Head Phantom, Normal type (Item No. US-14a, 1.5 kg) by Kyoto Kagaku, Japan is billed as the world’s first ultrasound neonatal head phantom with key anatomies — an accurate, healthy-baseline counterpart to the Abnormal type phantom, which simulates hydrocephalus.
A more complete anatomical structure list than the abnormal counterpart. This normal-type phantom includes the skull, anterior, posterior, and mastoid fontanels, cerebrum, cerebellum, brain-stem, lateral ventricle, third ventricle, fourth ventricle, and septum lucidum — a fuller structural picture appropriate for teaching normal developmental anatomy in depth before students move to pathology recognition.
Realistic feel for accurate technique. Like the abnormal type, this phantom offers a life-like soft touch that closely mirrors palpating a real neonatal skull, and supports scanning brain anatomy in sagittal (angled parasagittal), coronal, and transverse planes via any fontanel, plus palpation of all three fontanel sites.
Why train on this before the abnormal type: establishing a strong, detailed understanding of normal neonatal cranial anatomy is the foundation for recognizing pathology accurately later. Many institutions use this phantom first, then move to the Abnormal type phantom to teach hydrocephalus recognition against that established baseline.
What’s included: 1 ultrasound phantom, 1 pillow, storage case, talcum powder, instruction manual.
Developed under supervision of Charlotte Henningsen, Chair & Professor of the Sonography Department at Adventist University of Health Sciences.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s the difference between this and the Abnormal type phantom?
A: This normal-type phantom shows healthy neonatal cranial anatomy in full structural detail. The Abnormal type phantom (US-14b) simulates hydrocephalus via a hypertrophied lateral ventricle for pathology-recognition training.
Q: Should we buy both?
A: Many institutions do, so students can compare normal and abnormal findings directly during training. Contact our team if you’d like both as a set.
Q: Which fontanels can be used for scanning?
A: Anterior, posterior, and mastoid fontanels all support palpation and scanning access.
